Being a truck driver is fun and challenging, but sometimes it can be complicated. This career is more of a lifestyle than other jobs out there. That’s why it’s good to have some tricks to help out! Here are some lifestyle hacks that we recommend for truckers.

1. Watch your posture

This is a tip that can help anyone who sits for hours on the job, not just truckers. Sitting for long periods has been proven to result in health issues like reduced blood circulation, musculoskeletal imbalance, potbelly, and future postural issues. There are some things you can do to improve your posture, including sitting up straight, getting better seat cushions, and even exercising.

2. Exercise often

Speaking of fitness, make sure to work exercise into your schedule. This can be difficult in such a confined space, but definitely not impossible. Start by understanding your current capabilities and looking up routines on the internet. You can also buy small equipment like dumbbells and look into gym memberships that have locations in areas you typically drive to. Remember, exercise is part of a healthy lifestyle, and try to find something you enjoy!

3. Make sure to stay hydrated

Proper hydration is important for many aspects of your health. Dehydration can get so bad that you actually become a danger on the road. Be sure to drink plenty of water and beverages with electrolytes. Avoid sugary beverages like soda and energy drinks, as these can also be dangerous to your health.

4. Get plenty of good sleep

The value of good quality sleep cannot be overstated. It is vital that all truckers are well-rested before they hit the road. As with exercise, it can be challenging to keep a good schedule while on long trips. But, you can sleep well in your truck!

  • During the winter, use insulated sheets. These will keep you warmer and more comfortable.
  • Always communicate with dispatch if you need more sleep. You may have to interrupt a schedule, but your safety and that of other drivers are more important.
  • Use curtains if you need to sleep during the day.
  • Avoid noisy areas if you can. This will reduce distractions and help you have more consistent sleep.

5. Keep snacks on hand

You never know when hunger may strike. Sometimes your route will take you where there are not a lot of food options or stops. This is where healthy snacks can really come in handy. Keep a stash of mixed nuts, fruits (dried and fresh), boiled eggs, beef jerky, sunflower seeds, and granola bars. These are healthy choices that you can replenish at the beginning of every job.

6. Take care of your truck

Keeping your truck in good condition will help you stay safe on the road. There are many simple things you can do to take care of your vehicle that aren’t part of typical maintenance. For example, you can use toothpaste to clean the headlights and white vinegar to prevent fog on windshields and mirrors.

7. Make the cab of your truck comfortable

Even if you prefer to keep things professional when you are on the job, you should be comfortable. Do what you can to make the space your own! If you get hot easily, lighten up the interior of the truck, and if you get cold, use insulated curtains when you are pulled over. If you are organized, you can find hooks and other tools that can be placed throughout the cab to make things cleaner. Just be sure to know what you can and can’t do if you do not own the truck.

8. Make sure to take care of your personal needs

This goes along with being comfortable. Just like when you are at home, you must take care of yourself. This includes eating, showering, doing laundry, cleaning, and enjoying some downtime. It helps to have a plan for the days you will be away from home. Invest in things to make your life easier like a handheld vacuum, clothing bags, organizational containers, and planners. Make sure to have extra supplies, too, like an emergency toilet, batteries, blankets, and food.
